Pumpkins and Apples

Hi, families!

Our class have been reading and discussing about apples and pumpkins. The students are practicing how to use their "Prior Knowledge" (what they already know about the topic). We have also been working on creating word webs to map out the things we know and wonder about the topics we discuss. Before reading a book, we spend lots of time going on a picture walk. We use our "Linger Finger" to explore the pictures and notice things that would help us understand the book better. We might say, "Oh, I notice the girl's face is mad because her eyes are wide open and her mouth is clenched. I wonder what made her mad? I can guess..." Using this reading strategy build up your child's interest, anticipation and comprehension of the text. I hope you'll give it a try at home as well. Here are some articles on picture walk and questions to ask while reading with your child.

There are apples and pumpkins everywhere! Our students have been counting, scrubbing, cooking and eating pumpkins and apples. The most popular work we have right now is the pumpkin observational drawings. We read the book, Pumpkin Jack and created our own pumpkin to decompose in the classroom. We talked about mold, decomposing, composting, soil and nutrients. The students are very curious. This week, we will be adding worms in our new compost bin!

The Suder Sprint was a success! We got a little rain but that did not stop our EC students!

You have funded 2 Donorschoose projects and received several items from our Amazon wish list last week.Thank you very much for all that you give to Room 101. We are so lucky that you trust Ms. Castillo and I to be your partners in helping your child grow and love learning!
