Grace And Courtesy

Grace and courtesy is a huge part of our Montessori environment. We spend time discussing different scenarios that our students may encounter daily. Each child becomes a contributor to the solution we come up with to address future conflict. Some of the supports we have in the classroom are: the Peace Corner, Morning and Sunset meetings and rule making as a group. Ms. Castillo and I make sure that the children know the rationale behind the rules and procedures we have in place.

Our Peace Corner is a safe place where every child can go to clam down, recenter and resolve conflict. We have peace books that we have read and discussed accessible to the students as a reference and reminder of the strategies we have created in our room. There are story cards with visuals to help support the children in redirecting them when they lose focus or make mistakes. There are also several tinker toys such as hand labyrinth, sand timer, music boxes and others. We also have a Peace Rose that we have practiced using as a class. The rose is a concrete representation of turn and talking when solving a conflict. We have talked about being a listener and speaker during a conversation so that each person is heard. Here is a link to a video of the book, The Peace Rose being read by a teacher.

Our Morning and Sunset Meetings are very special because this is the time we gather as a family. We talk about so many things at these meetings: how we care and respect each other and how we can be a positive contributor to our class. The children also enjoy our meditation (Montessori Silence, Calm Classroom and Headspace to name a few) and other calming down activities. We also share our news (Morning) and reflections (Sunset) for the day. At these meetings, we also do some "love rituals" that increase our community building and love for each other. Part of this love ritual is our Wish Well. When a child is absent, we send them our love by wishing them well wherever they may be.

Please reach out if you would like some details on these strategies that you may also use at home. In my opinion, they are so amazing because they are centered on relationship building and perspective taking.

See you at school!

Always,

Celine Guerrero
