The Continent Map

Hello, Room 101 families!

I'm so excited to share that our class started our Continent Unit. Last Monday, I gave the lesson on how the globe became a map using an orange. They loved it! The children also now understand why we have "2 Antarticas". =) The class also learned the "Continent Song". Ask your child about it. Below are the words for the song:

Show me the continents, show me the continents
Show me the continents, if you can

North America, South America
Europe, Asia, Africa
Don't forget Australia
Don't forget Antartica

Show me the continents, show me the continents
Show me the continents, if you can

Snack Work

This week, our class started snack as a food preparation work. This activity is very valuable in a Montessori classroom. Children are learning to prepare their own snack. They are learning (to name a few):

  • sequencing (following step by step procedure)
  • name identification (finding their name sticks for the table setting)
  • Practical Life skills (tonging, scooping, grasping and other motor skills)
  • number recognition (preparing the number of snack to get)
  • Socio-emotional skills (conversing with peers during snack)
  • Grace and Courtesy (manners, using fabric napkins, care for the environment and others)
This activity also follows the Montessori Philosophy of Care for self, others and environment. Eventually, the children will wash their own plates, silverware and napkins. The students will also have the opportunity to do flower arranging to help beautify our room.

I hope you enjoy the pictures and idea behind our classroom's snack preparation.

This is our snack set up for the day.

Dylan is counting 5 pretzels and 5 grapes to eat for snack.

Let's eat! =)
