Exploring the World Through Montessori

"The senses, being explorers of the world, open the world to knowledge. Our apparatus for educating the senses offers the child a key to guide his explorations of the world..."

                                                                                    -Maria Montessori

Last week was our first field trip of the school year. The children went to an apple orchard and picked their own apples. They were able to choose between several varieties of apples. The conversations I overheard between children were very interesting. Some planned how many apples they were going to pick and some decided on what colors they will choose. The students discussed which apples were ready to be picked and which were still "babies". They had so much fun!

"A child more than anyone else, is a spontaneous observer of nature."

In the classroom, we had apple tasting and the children chose their favorite ones! Gala apple was the winner! We also started our "Soup Friday" by making apple sauce using the apples we picked from the orchard. The children scrubbed, chopped and diced the apples all by themselves. They were so proud of their accomplishments. We all enjoyed their recipe during Sunset Meeting.

Lastly, we have added more class jobs in our room. The students are becoming more responsible of the care of their classroom. Our Suder Virtues: Care for Self, Others and Environment are observed in Room 101. The children are making connections between the work they do and the importance of being a caring contributor of their community.

We are at the apple orchard!!!

Apple picking all day, yay!

Frances, Amelia and Leslie posed for the picture, while Santi looked for the perfect apple to pick.

Stefan explored the orchard.

Maya was our Animal Keeper this week.

Winter used the ten-frame to count out beads for Flower Arranging.

Julieta picked a flower for Flower Arranging.

Their beautiful creations!

We are ready to start "Soup Friday" with some apple sauce making.

Chop, chop!

Scrub, Chop!

More apple preparation...

I love the focus and intentionality of their work.

Uneven pieces of apples are lovely to look at.

There is some negotiation going on here.

Here we are at Sunset Meeting enjoying our hard work!

Yum!

Who wants seconds?

There's apple sauce for everyone.

Yummy!

We love to make our own snacks.

I want more!

Let's do this again next Friday!

  1. So wonderful to see, thanks for sharing! S happened to make "fruit soup" today with plastic fruit he "cut". When I called it fruit salad, he said no mom, "it's fruit soup." I can now see where the idea was born. :)
